Appreciating Wine

By Tiernan Cutler

I have now visited Tenucia Torciano, a winery out in the hills of San Gimignano, four times in the last two months while on the Bus2alps Siena & San Gimignano day trip. However, each time I feel like I learn more and more about the multi-billion dollar industry that surrounds not only my life in Italy, but also in California. My appreciation for wine has grown immensely since my move to Florence, and it feels good to finally understand the difference between the 4 bottles for 10 euro quality wine, and the bottle that was the 2008 world champion. The mixture of the varying wines paired with the fine pecorino and balsamic, the delicious homemade ribollita (Tuscan bean soup), and the mouthwatering lasagna draped in truffle oil that the winery provides for us, has convinced me to no longer choose a wine solely based upon the design of the label, but rather which will go best with my meal that night. And while I’m far from considering myself a wine expert, I am definitely confident now in my ability to at least select a wine that will enhance my dining experience.

Bus2alps operates day trips to Siena & San Gimignano frequently throughout the semester.  You can check out our schedule here.  For information on other day trips departing from Florence, please look at our Florence Day Trips page.
