Under the Grecian Sun

15 Sep

This blog entry was written by Alli Baldwin.

I love olives.  I love feta cheese.  And I really love ancient Greek warriors (especially the ones from the movie 300).  Hello Greece, my name is Alli.

If there is one trip this semester that I am excited about, it is Greece. With its’ proximity to Italy, it is foolish for anyone spending a good amount of time here to not consider making the trip over the Ionian Sea.

The first island we go to is always Corfu. Homer described Corfu as his “beautiful, rich land” and Shakespeare used it as his background for The Tempest. Oh, and did we mention that we stay at the Pink Palace, a backpacker resort with Toga Parties, booze cruises, and ATVs. I can’t think of a reason not to go to Corfu…unless you don’t like to have a good time.

Next stop is the capital, because you can’t miss that! Athens is home to the Acropolis, Parthenon temple, and is one of the most important cities in Western Civilization. We have a sweet walking tour of the city, which happens to be the oldest city in Europe.

Then there is Santorini, the iconic Greek island.  If any of you have seen the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants (which you all probably have since it’s a classic), this is where Lena falls in love with Kostas…so obviously you need to go there.  If you are not a fan of the Sisterhood, Santorini is the place with the gorgeous white houses overlooking the blue water.  I get excited just writing about it.

Sure there are rumblings in the news about their faltering economy, the people resisting taxes, and all that jazz, but the Greeks, and media, always overact (I am Greek, so I can say this). I go to Greece frequently, and Greece is still safe, and always will be (unless the Persians turn the clock back to 500 BC). Have no fear, Bus2alps heads to only the best, and most drama free places in Greece!

Greece is gorgeous.  Greece is fun. Greece has good food. Greece, Greece, Greece. I seriously cannot wait to get there.  I just did a fist pump, but maybe that’s just because I went to school in New York.
