Behind the Mainstream Study Abroad – Moments that are Worth Duplicating

25 May

Sitting in my apartment, I can hear tourists pass by on the Florentine street outside my window. Some complain about the rain, others comment on how beautiful the Duomo is. Some girls pass talking about day trips they’ll do while they study here, while others scoff at the fact that there’s a Subway Sandwich shop across the street. “Are you kidding?! When there’s an amazing Panini place right around the corner?!” All the conversations are varied, yet so much the same – living or visiting this beautiful city and looking at it through the eyes of a foreigner. But sometimes, I wish I could tell them that they need to stop and step off the main path. Adventure. I wish I could share some experiences that are my favorite – but if you’re reading this – maybe you can recreate these moments.

Sunrise somewhere: Before the tour groups step off their busses, before the restaurants open up their doors and unfurl their tablecloths out into the summer air, stroll the streets of dawn.

We woke when it was dark out and crawled out of bed, fumbling in the unfamiliar hotel room – donning jeans, a sweater, boots that I thought would make me fit in while I was in Italia. Caitlyn looked at me and questioned this decision, is it worth it? I responded with a resounding yes. I had done this before. We stepped outside our hotel – a small canal silently greeting us, a red rowboat sleeping peacefully in off-season air. And then we began, a walk through twisting and turning streets of dormant shops and ornate doors to come up upon the Grand Canal of Venice – just in time to see the golden sunset begin to shed light on the City of Bridges. Below us, the only boats were of the Venetians – Gondoliers uncovering their golden gilded boats, their striped shirts contrasting upon the rose and faded walls of an exhausted city. But in this moment, senza touristi, it became alive again. The real Venice; radiant in life instead of a travel book.

Conversation without Social Media: Turn off your phone when you travel. The person next to you could change your life.

I was lost in Rome, again, but managed to find a bus stop that seemed to point me in the right direction of the Vatican, I hoped. It wasn’t too crowded – not like rush hour when you are pressed up against other bodies, all just desperately clinging onto the bars and handles available. Now, in the evening chill, I stepped lightly into the orange bus and faced forward, beginning to search for signs that confirmed my arrival at the heart of Catholicism. He was quiet at first, and maybe it was my outfit that gave me away, but when the bus came to a stop at the next station, he patted my wrist. “Due piu” he smiled at me behind thick-rimmed glasses. Two more stops until the Vatican. When he realized I could speak minimal Italian, his face brightened, his brown eyes swam and he began teaching me the landmarks that were passing by the window. He spoke about the beauty of women when they don’t wear makeup: “that is when they look most beautiful, when they first wake up in the morning,” and as the Vatican came into view, he grinned, told me to drink the water from the fountains in the square and sent me off. A true Roman, he will be in my memory forever.

Adrenaline: Do something that scares you:

“I can’t wait,” I had boasted as we rode through the Swiss Alps. I saw the guide’s eyes flicker to my face in the rear-view mirror. I loved heights and adrenaline. I had seen my friends jump before, but canyon jumping was new to me – and as we pulled up to the bottom and saw another jumper fall gracefully into the crevice with a loud WHOOP, I was terrifyingly ecstatic. And the higher we climbed up to the platform, the more nerves began to creep into my system. The tremors in my legs began as I was fixed into the harness. I stepped out onto the metal grate with the guide. His smile was trumped by the sheer drop off behind him. “Are you ready?” he asked, and as I turned to face forward, I looked around. The Eiger was to my right – in the setting sun, in all of its glory – a Swiss Alp towered above us. Below, so, so far below, the river crashed over the rocks, daring me to jump, daring me to try and fly. Split second decision, my muscles moved, my feet left solid ground and I was falling, falling so fast, so far, my stomach clenched, my heart raced, it was too far, too fast, a free-fall like a bird soaring, and then the rope caught – swung me through past those that had already jumped, and back again. I could breathe, and as I looked up from where I had just come, I gave a “whoop” of my own. No roller coaster will ever compare.

Delve into other cultures: Break out of your comfort zone to begin to understand others.

“Here, I cannot speak with a girl like this,” he says. His dark brown eyes squint into the Moroccan sun, searching the horizon for the next surge of water from the Atlantic. I don’t understand what he means. I lean forward to look at him closer and the nose of my board settles into the water. He turns and glances at me and then back to the water, his dark brown shoulders glistening with droplets of salt water.

“If I want to speak with a Muslim girl, it is secret. No one can know. Here is one. Turn,” he leans toward me and pushes at my leg, eyes still on the ocean. I look out, see the swell, and obediently turn and lie on my blue and white surfboard, chin hitting wax, resting my eyes on the golden Moroccan sand with Mounir’s board and back to my left. Still sitting, his muscles ripple as he balances.

“That’s stupid,” I say over my shoulder. “How can you talk to them in private if you don’t know them?” The sun is hot. He chuckles and tickles my foot.

“Paddle.”

“I couldn’t be Muslim,” I say as I feel the wave build behind me. He laughs again and takes hold of the back of my board, one hand resting on my calf, he pats it twice. The earthen scent of Argan Oil from his skin drifts towards me on the breeze.

“No…you are too strong….paddle,” he reminds me.

I sweep my hands into the water and under my board, pushing. I hear the wave crashing to the right of me. I feel Mounir push me forward.

“Stand up!” he calls under his French/Arabic accent. The wave carries me from him, surging me toward the beach. I can feel the board bouncing on the tumult. My hands push up against the board, my muscles tense, legs bend. I stand and shift my weight, easing the board into the side of the wave, gliding it down the stretch of water. I push against the water, up and down, pumping the board parallel with the wave until it breaks. I glide to the shore with the foam, jump off, feel the grit of the sand under the soles of my feet. I turn toward the horizon, raising an arm up to shield the sun. His silhouette gives a thumbs up as the ocean glistens behind him.

Run, hike, bike, climb – while you are still young enough:

“You won’t last in jeans,” I tell the guys as they stand in front of me. It’s autumn in the Swiss Alps, about fifty degrees, and I’m in a tank top and shorts. “It’s too rough and you’ll be sweating in about fifteen minutes.” But they were stubborn and came anyway, and as we started our ascent, the hike grew steep and they started stripping layers. I hated to say I told them so. But it didn’t matter – because they were doing it. We talked as we hiked, getting glimpses of the snow-covered alps on the other side of the valley – with the town of Interlaken nestled before us. I learned about the group, their time abroad, their home life, what sports they played, and we stopped to take pictures along the way. It grew steeper, and sweat started pouring, the banter stopped, for we needed to breathe and muscles ached. We climbed up into the mountain pastures, collected water from a hollowed out log used as a basin for the spring water used to satisfy the thirst of the cows that grazed there in the summer – their bells chiming in an unorganized harmony. When we reached the summit, I turned to the group and was met with smiles and astonishment as they looked out over the lakes and mountains. “Thank God I did this and have the ability to do this,” one said to me. Take care of yourself and challenge yourself – for sometimes the best views are at the other end of a climb.

Travel Advice for Flo-Town Peeps – Recommended Places to Visit this Summer!

18 May

Summertime travel is simple. There’s less to pack, everything is open, people are happy, and the sun is (usually) shining. Trying to decide where to travel – especially with so many options so close and easy to get to, is difficult. Take it from an experienced traveler; go with your gut feeling. Go where you’re drawn to and don’t second guess your decisions. Feel like the Swiss Alps would fit you like a glove? You’re probably right. Rather just hang on the beach all day? Positano on the Amalfi Coast is calling your name. But if you’re bad at decisions, Bus2alps may be able to help you out a bit. Let’s look at the options of getting you out of Flo-town: There’s almost too many to mention, but for an ideal travel schedule – hitting all of the main points, this is a list of a few suggestions to get your mind reeling about the possibilities:

Amalfi: Some of the bluest water you’ve ever seen, black sand beaches that make your skin glow with the summer sun, towns built up on breathtaking cliffs painted with beautiful pastels, and seafood that is out of this world. Welcome to the Amalfi Coast. Bus2alps has you staying in beautiful Sorrento, and then transports you to the Isle of Capri, Positano, and stops in Pompeii on the way home. A perfect mix of touring, beach time, and historical sites – there’s a reason why this tour has won awards in the past. Go cliff jumping, browse the coral jewelry, sip on limoncello on the rooftop terrace of Seven Hostel, and enjoy a weekend in paradise.

Rome: Though Florence is gorgeous, the Eternal city is just a few hours south and well worth the journey. Head to Rome and explore the sights you’ve had in your history books for ages. Walk through the Coliseum and picture the Gladiators, picture the war celebrations parading through the Forum, throw that coin over your shoulder at the Trevi fountain, and end the day with a look up at the ceiling of the Pantheon. Then head out to explore the illuminated city – Vatican, the Spanish steps, and check out a few of Bus2alps’s favorite restaurants and nightlife spots along the way. It’s a weekend roaming Rome and well worth it.

French Riviera: Spend a weekend pretending to be famous (or maybe even taste a little bit of real fame) while strolling the French Riviera with the likes of Beyonce, Keith Urban, Jennifer Aniston, and the Kardashians. Head to Wayne’s Bar and dance above the crowd, and maybe even find someone with a yacht that’s feeling generous enough for guests (no, but really, it’s happened). During the day, travel to Eze, Monaco and Antibes, hit up the Monte Carlo Casino and try your luck. This place will require a little shopping, but that’s the perfect excuse to get a nice Italian suit or a new pair of heels, right? Plus, needless to say, the beaches are gorgeous.

Munich: Though Springfest may be over, Munich is still bustling with life in the summer when the snow has cleared and the people are out in the streets. Take a bike tour and learn a little history – you can even have a sobering visit to Dachau, the local concentration camp and remember how recent history really is. Then spend the night meeting the locals in the beer halls and gardens all while making sure you get in that taste of perfect brews and the biggest bratwurst you’ll ever see.

Croatia: Picture it: you get off the bus and begin your walk through a rainforest – the roots of the trees are tangled above crystal clear water swimming with fish swimming against the current. You’re walking on wooden paths twisting and turning among the vines. Waterfalls can be heard in the distance. On your left and right, meadows flourish with little purple flowers – a carpet of sweet scented beauty and finally, you round a bend and see the most beautiful tumult of waterfalls with a pool at the bottom of emerald water. The swimming is gorgeous. This is just the last day of your time in Croatia. Before this, you’ve been whitewater rafting and island hopping off the coast of Split. Yes, it is a little bit longer of a bus ride, but the beauty is worth it.

Prague: Spend a weekend in the city of fairy tales  Watch the clock tower, riddled with myths and legends, come to life on the hour and ring out over beautiful architecture and the river below. Then, visit the “happily ever after” John Lennon wall – where words and art depicting peace and love will make your cameras glow and your hearts grow two sizes bigger, plus you can leave your own mark. Remember to bring a sharpie! At night after a day of beauty, meet up with your group to head out onto town and maybe even finish at one of Bus2alps’s favorites – Lucerna a club that plays the best of the best 90’s music.

Cinque Terre: Only a two hour drive from Florence, Cinque Terre is a gorgeous one-day getaway that is good for those that want some time in Florence for the weekend, but still go to somewhere beautiful on the coast. Spend the day hiking between towns, or sun bathing on the cliffs or on the beach in Monterosso. Eat tons of pesto-covered things like focaccia bread and pizza. Get a pina colada and use your photography skills for the brightly colored towns precariously perched on the cliffs. It’s a day getaway to get out of the stone of Florence, and you’ll be back to go out that night!

These are just a few places that we’d recommend for the summer – of course there are many more that may peak your interest, but now is the time to plan! Get moving.

Fall Orientation 2012

25 Aug

At the beginning of every semester, the Bus2alps crew – old and new – comes together in our hometown of Interlaken, Switzerland to hang out, get to know one another and get prepared for one hell of a semester.  Take a sneak peak into our Fall orientation.

Day 1:  Monday kicked off our journey to Interlaken.  The bus ride began in Rome making stops along the way at Ciampino airport, Florence and Milan Malpensa airport and ended with our final destintation at Balmer’s Hostel and Backpacker’s Villa.  There was a lot of excitement as it was a chance to reunite with friends that had been home and travelling for the summer and to meet and greet the newcomers.  Of course, the bus ride went by fast because we all caught up with each other and watched DVD’s.

Day 2We had an early start on Tuesday compromised of meetings and presentations to help us get acquainted with each other and the company.  During free time, some of the crew took advantage of the opportunity to rent bicycles and cool off at the lake.

In the evening, we chilled out and refueled over some pizza.  It gave us yet another chance to take in the gorgeous scenery of Interlaken and just relax for a little bit before continuing on with activities.

Post-pizza party we were ready to get back at it and refine our CPR skills. We were lucky enough to learn first-hand all of the techniques and important information that we need to know on how to save lives. I think it’s safe to say that we felt a lot more confident in ourselves after we practiced CPR on a dummy that was hooked up to a computer. We got to see if we were breathing too much air into the body or if our compressions were too fast. It was pretty cool!

Day 3:  Wednesday was packed with more meetings and presentations.  But since we were so good, we were rewarded with some Swiss chocolate from Interlaken Tourism!  After some refreshers, tips and lots of important information to have a great semester – the fun began.

Some of the returning staff paired up with the new staff to take them on a little adventure around Interlaken to help them get to know the area  a little bit better.  The best part of the adventure?  It ended up with the whole team meeting back up to set off on a dinner cruise!  It was pretty fabulous as it consisted of great sights, delicious food and a chance for the newbies to show off some of the things they had learned over the past couple of days.

Day 4:  On Thursday we wrapped up the last of our meetings and presentations in the morning.  Afterwards, we headed over to Outdoor Interlaken, a partner of Bus2alps, to get ready to go canyoning.  We picked out our wetsuits, jackets, life jackets, boots and helmets and then packed into 3 vans for the beautiful hour-long ride to Grimsel.  Once we arrived, the adrenaline began pumping…

Canyoning is a popular summer activity in Interlaken that consists of rappelling, jumps, slides and ziplines into natural pools.  I think it’s safe to say that everyone from the Bus2alps crew will be recommending this to anyone looking for something to do during their stay in Switzerland.

After we finished our course, we relaxed over some well-deserved refreshments and headed back into town for a BBQ and dancing at Metro Bar.

Day 5:  Friday morning we said our goodbyes to Switzerland and headed back to our respective cities.

Needless to say, the Florence crew, the Rome crew and the Barcelona crew are ready for an amazing Fall semester!

Beating the Heat

10 Jul

When I studied abroad in Florence, Italy two summers ago, the first thing that I learned in Italian was, “L’Italia è un forno” meaning Italy is an oven.  Let’s face it.  Italy in the summertime is hot.  The cities tend to be full of mosquitoes and heat rests on the shoulders of the city.  Don’t get me wrong- Italy in the summer is still a wonderful fairytale, but that does not mean that I did not look forward to escaping each weekend to somewhere a bit…cooler.

My friends and I hanging out at Lake Brienz in Interlaken

Interlaken, Switzerland in the summer is a dream.  Sunshine in the mountains during the day paired with cool mountain air at night make for the perfect weekend getaway.  Hiking in the alps will humble anyone.  Bus2alps has trips to Interlaken a few times each summer and it is not worth missing out on.  My weekend in Interlaken was one of the few times I actually felt cool air during my 12 week summer program.  Interlaken during the winter is amazing don’t get me wrong- but during the summer, it’s a mountain paradise.  I am down for canyon jumping, sky diving, any adventure really- as long as I can leave my snow pants at home.

Other than submerging my body in glacier water in the Swiss Alps, escaping to Croatia is a must to cool off.  While it is hot outside, it doesn’t feel so hot when you are swimming in the waterfalls at Krka National Park.

Right before we went swimming in the waterfalls

Right before we went swimming in the waterfalls

Chillin with the Yachts in Monaco

Rolling the dice in the air conditioned and incredibly famous Monte Carlo in Monaco will keep you cool.  Especially if you win some euros in the process.  The beaches of Nice are fabulous as you have probably heard, and the city was actually built to produce a summer breeze.  Like Italy, the south of France is very hot during the summer months, but the buildings are built high and close together to produce shade and a flow of cool air.  Ideal for any summer traveler.  The Bus2alps trip to the French Riviera has opportunities to scuba dive, sail, swim and suntan.

Really all I am trying to say is that Bus2alps is looking out for your best interest this summer.  We want you to stay cool, while still seeing some of the most beautiful places in the world.  Don’t spend your summer sweating in Rome.  Escape to some of the coolest, most exotic destinations that Europe has to offer.

Why We Do What We Do – Mid Summer Musings

9 Jul

As we celebrated the Fourth of July this past week with celebrations of hot dogs and burgers, we sat back and recapped the past few weeks of summer. We realized that all of us here, while we are driven by crazy schedules and all go off in different directions every weekend, we still have complete common ground when it comes to why we are here, doing what we do.

Yes, we brag that our weekends are spent on the black sand beaches of Positano, Amalfi Coast, or perched up high in the Alps of Interlaken, Switzerland. And our jobs may look pretty selfish ( if we hear that we have the coolest job ever one more time, our egos may explode) but truly, we’re here for you, and because Bus2alps was here for us when we studied abroad.

We do this job for the travel, yes, but we do it to travel with people who love to travel as much as us. We do it to hear the whole bus ooh and ahh as we turn the last corner and see the lights of Sorrento cascading down to the ocean at two in the morning. To see the pride on the faces of those that just finished the hike to Monterosso al Mare in Cinque Terre. We love having you walk into Balmers with wet hair and a smile on your face as you start telling us how incredible canyoning was. We love seeing your eyes light up at the architecture of Prague, the sunset on the islands of Greece, and the taste of the prefect gelato in Rome or Florence. We love seeing a group from all over the country and from different schools coming together to play cards, kick a soccer ball around, and toast to new friends. JMU with FSU, the artists of SACI collaborating with the chefs of RMU. This is why we’re here. We do it to hear that famous line; “this has been the best day/weekend/week of my life.”

Our aim is to make your experience here even better than just studying in a foreign country,  and allowing you to see sights you may never have the opportunity to see otherwise. We did it while abroad, and now we’re spreading the secret to making study abroad the best memories of your life with the best and fastest growing student travel company in Europe – your favorite – Bus2alps. Thank you for the memories that we’ve had so far. We can’t wait for those to come in the next few weeks.

I Am Not In The United States Right Now

Before you start reading these next posts, I should give you a fair warning, because this past weekend in Switzerland may have been the best weekend of my life. Okay, maybe I’m exaggerating, but still, this has to go in the top three! Read on if you dare! (Translation: read on if you have a lot of time on your hands and a lot of patience for my ramblings.)

Let’s start with the flight out on Thursday evening— I have never had an easier or more enjoyable flight than the flight to Geneva. First of all, Swiss Air is THE BEST. They gave us sandwiches and chocolate for our all of 1.5 hour trip (step it up, ‘merica!). But more importantly, the clouds were BEAUTIFUL. It felt like we were flying through a landscape of cotton candy. Unfortunately, it was too dark by the time we arrived in Geneva to see any of the landscape, but the bus ride to Interlaken was great!

We stayed at a pretty well-known hostel called Balmer’s Herberge and it is seriously way too cool. It is a quaint little hostel right about a ten minute walk from “downtown” Interlaken, filled with people from every corner of the world. There was a little water fountain outside Balmers which boasted the best spring water in the world. THEY WERE SO RIGHT. The water tasted like you could fill your lungs and breathe it in, it was so pure and clean.

The next day (Friday) we woke up fairly early (hey now, we got in at 2am, 8am is early), and went into town to withdraw Swiss Francs. From there, Chelsea, Kiana and I decided to walk down to see one of the two lakes bordering Interlaken. We followed the river down, which was gorgeous. The water was bright cerulean blue, and its color was enhanced by the minerals in the water, that made it a cloudy white-ish blue. Gosh, I am so sorry about that description. But I truly cannot do the color justice through words. Get excited for some big hand motions and freak outs when I get back home! All I wanted to do was stand there and consume as much air as I could. I suppose im doing things backwards in Interlaken, wanting to breathe the water and drink the air! The walk to the lake was about an hour and a half, and SO worth it. The lakes weren’t as chalky looking as the river, but equally blue and beautiful. Honestly, with the deep green mountains bordering it, the lake looked like part of the Harry Potter set. I half expected the Durmstrang ship from book 4 to surface at any second. Speaking of Harry Potter, there was a town called “Grindelwald” near Interlaken, so all of us Harry Potter fans were having quite the time!

So, Switzerland is famous for many things, but obviously the most important thing is chocolate (let’s be honest here, people). There was a local chocolate shop with a chocolate-making demonstration every night, which we attended, of course. The best part was the “open bar” of caramel, dark chocolate, and cherry truffles. So dangerous. I’m pretty sure I ate half my weight in chocolate in the space of the 45 minute demonstration. It was AMAZING. Afterwards, we went to a traditional Swiss restaurant, where I had a salad (don’t judge me, I was very near comatose after that chocolate!), but a few of us split fondue, which of course I had to try. I’m pretty sure all we will eat in Heaven will be Swiss bread, cheese, and chocolate. I mean, for what more can you ask, anyway?!

On Saturday, the five of us girls decided to wake up early, 7am this time (it just gets progressively earlier), to hike “Harder Kulm,” a legit mountain right on the outskirts of Interlaken. There are two routes to take, one easier, longer route, and a much harder, but shorter route. We started on the long route, and were making awful time because we stopped to take pictures so often. It was so hard to resist, okay! Each viewing point was even more breathtaking and picturesque than the last, and I’m sure everyone wanted to strangle me because of the amount of times I would say “this CANNOT be real!” Eventually, we split up into 3 groups, because Madeline and I wanted to take the more direct trail. Can I just say, HOLY WORKOUT. We were definitely moving along at a good pace, and let me tell you, there were some really steep parts to that route. It was challenging, but in a good way. You know the feeling you get when it feels like every single cell of your lungs is working? Well imagine that, except with the most delicious air ever. I know I am going on and on about the air, but really, it felt AMAZING to fill my lungs with that stuff.

Chelsea and I had to split off to go canyoning.  I had no idea what canyoning was before this weekend. Basically, it is a hybrid of cliff jumping, rock climbing, hiking, and water-sliding, all through the mountain rivers. We signed up for the easiest excursion, and it was AMAZING. Our group of 12 rappelled down boulders, jumped down (small) waterfalls, marched through semi-rapids, and walked alongside the river for about 3 hours. The people in our group were so fantastic. Our leaders, Mustard and Stan, were so great, and I’m pretty sure they could throw me 50 feet with one arm.

When we returned from canyoning, we met up with the other 3 girls and had a delicious dinner of more cheese and bread (don’t lie, I know you’re jealous!). Afterwards, while looking into other activities for Sunday, a parade of milk cows comes right by the hostel window, accompanied by people in traditional Swiss clothing. It was HILARIOUS. None of us knew what was happening, but it was great. We returned for another fabulous night at the Metro Bar.

A weekend in paradise

Croatia is perhaps my favorite place in the entire world. After being landlocked in a very chilly and rainy Czech Republic (which is still beautiful, of course), I could not express how excited I was to take a weekend to get away to the gorgeous country of Croatia. I had heard nothing but good things about it, and was determined to get there. However, actually getting there posed quite the challenge. There were NO buses or trains, and the cheapest flight was 550 euros! It was looking depressing, and then, we met Allison with Bus2Alps. Alli was so kind and helped us set up a private bus trip to Croatia for an extremely affordable price. We had an awesome guide, Alex, and each had two seats on the bus on the way there, which made the 13 hours each way bearable.

Alex, our tour guide and me

Actually, the bus was more than bearable, it was fun! We watched movies, napped, and all got to know each other better. The trip consisted of BHP kids, MPAs, and 3 girls who were studying at Charles University. Everyone was ready for some sun and in a great mood.

We arrived in Split around 11:30 on Friday morning after spending the entire night on the bus. After eating a quick breakfast at the Goli and Bosi Hostel, we all sprinted up to our rooms, which were awesome, and threw on our swimsuits. A day at the beach was the perfect remedy for our colds and pale skin, and everyone soaked in some much needed R&R.

That night, we all gathered for a pub crawl around Croatia. The first bar we went to was an open bar through the entire Germany-Greece Eurocup game, which made out for a lot of fun. Almost too much fun for a couple of our crew! The whole pub-crawl was a blast, and we meet many international friends from Australia, Norway, England, France, and more.

The next morning was a tough one for everyone to wake up, but when we did we got to get on a boat for an Island Hoping tour! Can you say paradise? We sailed for around an hour and a half, visited two different gorgeous islands and beaches, had a delicious meal, and soaked in even more sun. All I could think the entire day was how can people do bad things when there is such beauty? I even had a little inspiration for my Plan II Senior Thesis while sitting on an overlook searching the sea.

After we got home from the island hoping tour, we all rushed to change and then boarded the bus again to journey to the nearby town of Trogir. Let me tell you, the bustling nightlife, incredible food, gorgeous food, and white washed architecture stole my heart. I cannot wait to go back, because all I can say about the city is that it is absolutely enchanting.

Split’s port
In Trogir, Croatia. A town that comes straight out of the middle ages.

Sunday morning began early as I walked through the market to explore the fruit stands and flower markets. Even at 8 am, the market was bustling as everyone retrieved their ingredients for the day. I seriously craved having a kitchen so that I could explore all of the flavors available in the market.

Diocletian’s Palace in Split
The flower market in Split. Some of the most beautiful arrangements I have ever seen.

Shortly after leaving the market, we all boarded the bus again for the long haul home. But first, before the 13 hour stretch, we stopped at Krka National Park, which by far was the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen. We walked on platforms that were just surrounded by running water and saw hundreds of little falls, and a couple of really big ones too. My breath was taken away by the sight and sound. Words literally could not describe the elation everyone felt in witnessing such a powerful force of nature. At the end of the hike, we all jumped into the refreshing waters of the falls and were showered by the falling water. A couple of photo shoots ensued, and everyone had a great time.

I could stay here forever.
As Shaun put it, I saw two of my favorite places in the world in 12 hours. I would definitely call this weekend a success. Croatia, take me back.

Take me back to Switzerland

12 Mar

This is an entry for our Spring 2012 Why We Ride Blog ContestClick here to read the original blog post on Lauren’s blog “la bella vita”, as well as her other adventures while studying abroad.
This past weekend I went to Interlaken, Switzerland! This was probably one of the most spur of the moment, random trips I’ve ever taken! After my roommates and I booked our trip 2 days before it left we were a little nervous that we would be so out of the loop, but thanks to Bus2alps, the student travel group we went with, everything was as smooth as it could be:) As soon as we arrived in Interlaken after our 12 hour bus ride I automatically felt at home. Even just walking into our hostel, Balmer’s Herberage (if anyone ever makes it to Interlaken you have to stay here!!!!) I could tell that it was my kind of place! Balmer’s was amazing…from the Swiss decorations, awesome staff, and even bar underneath I couldn’t have asked for a more culture filled and welcoming place to stay! Little did I know that this little hostel was the start to one of the most amazing weekends I could have ever dreamed of. I can honestly say that I’ve never met nicer people, eaten such amazing chocolate, and seen unbelievable views like I did in this little Swiss town. No matter which way I turned I was surrounded by the beautiful snow covered Swiss Alps, what more could I ask for:)

The first day we spend wondering around the small, but enchanting city of Interlaken:) We soon found out that even though the exchange rate was awesome compared to Italy, everything was sooo expensive! So, we let the scenery be good enough for us and decided to explore the lakes that give Interlaken it’s name as well as the hundreds of panoramic views and of course we had to stop in some chocolate shops! The lakes were straight out of a postcard, turquoise water, pebble beaches, and the Swiss Alps as a backdrop:)

When I thought I had seen all the beauty that Interlaken had to offer, we ran into one of the Bus2alps girls, Jenny, who told us that we had to come with her to the top of the MetroPole hotel for the most amazing view. Once we got there I completely understood why…every which way I turned were the huge snow covered Alps, below me were the small colorful villages of Interlaken, and all I could hear was the Swiss-German dialect spoken around me. I literally felt like I was in a dream! Mimosa’s at this panoramic bar were a definite must, even though they were 9 Swiss Francs for what seemed like a shot of orange juice ahh!

To finish our first day off we had to go rent all of our ski gear for the next day and then thought it would be a perfect idea to go to a chocolate show and then to the bar underneath our hostel:) Even though I was dreading going to rent our ski stuff because all I wanted to do was go explore, I was pleasantly surprised at how fun it was. All of the people at Outdoor Interlaken were Australian and some of the coolest people I’ve met. Not only did they help us pick out the perfect gear for our once in a lifetime skiing experience, but they also were just good hearted people:) Although they weren’t Swiss, they really defined for me the attitude and kindness that all of the Swiss people seemed to go out of their way to show constantly. The chocolate show was awesome, especially since we got so much free chocolate! It was so cool because we literally got to see every stage that the chocolate goes through from when its picked off of the cocoa trees to being made right there in Switzerland! We even got to try fresh cocoa beans, sadly they tasted nothing like chocolate hah.

The second day we woke up super early and started heading for the slopes!!!! It was a pretty good trek to get there, but it was well worth it! It was so funny how strict all off the transportation cops were there compared to Italy where you can pretty much ride all of the buses and trains for free if your sneaky. But, that definitely wasn’t the case in Switzerland! As soon as I saw one of the many policemen walking towards me I though it was no big deal, I would just give him my bus pass that the hostel gave me and he would be on his way, but of course that didn’t happen at all. Little did I know that even if you had your name and hostel on the card, if you forget to put the date on there you’ll end up with a 90 franc ticket!!! I almost had a heart attack, but luckily Austin withBus2alps was there to tell me that I didn’t have to pay it! It was so crazy how high the train took us and then we still had to take a gondola up even higher, the views were amazzzing!

When we first got to the top of the mountain I literally couldn’t believe what I was seeing, I don’t think I’ve ever seen so much white in my life, or such a beautiful sunrise:) It as almost mystifying and crazy; words can’t even begin to describe it or how unreal the skiing was. It was definitely the craziest skiing I’ve ever done considering I’ve only been skiing in Indiana hah. I never knew that trails could last longer than an five minutes! It was pretty crazy how in the middle of nowhere I felt, yet there were little homes, restaurants, and pubs everywhere on the side of the mountains that you could stop at…so of course we had to stop and get a local Swiss beer!!

That was probably my favorite part of the whole day, I even got to call my dad and tell him how much he would love all of the snow:) Once we finally got to the top of the mountain we ate lunch in a huge Indian tee pee, it was so cool!!! The only downside to getting to the top was having to find our way down…which turned into skiing/walking uphill, falling off of a t-bar in the middle of nowhere by myself hah, and getting stuck in what seemed like a blizzard. Let’s just say that by the end of the day I was so tired I could barely move. But, we still had night sledding and a traditional Swiss fondue dinner which was soo good:) I’m so thankful that I got to go to this amazing place and hope that I can go back again someday, and hopefully my dad can come because it would be in absolute heaven:) If only Bus2alps could plan that trip for us too!!

I probably could have stayed a lot longer in Switzerland, but I’m determined to get back there someday no matter what:) I can’t think of a better way to spend my first weekend trip in Europe and hope to do soo many more trips with Bus2alps!!

Interlaken = Best Weekend of My Life

This past weekend I went to Interlaken, Switzerland with a group of friends.  We went with a group called Bus2Alps, which is a tour group that plans trips all around Europe for study abroad students.  They are such and amazing group and the best thing is, you don’t have to think all weekend and just get to enjoy the trip.  They get you everywhere and know all the destinations so well that they take you to things you would have never known to go see beforehand or had a way to get there.

On Thursday night, we all met up at the train station to catch the bus.  The bus was really nice and there was a good amount of foot room.  The drive there was about 8 hours.  They plated a couple of movies, but I quickly fell for a couple of hours once we got back on the bus.  We arrived to Interlaken around 3:30am and were dropped off right in front of our hostel. We stayed at Balmer’s.  There were 10 of total (5 girls and 5 boys) in our room.  We had beautiful views from our windows and it felt like a real cabin in Switzerland.
After a couple hours of sleep, we went to get our free breakfast.  It wasn’t anything special, but was free so we made sure to make it down.  Then it was time for skydiving!
We skydived at Scenic Air-Skydive Switzerland.  After the four of us signed our lives away, we got suited up.  There were three planes and we were on the last one.  The plane ride up was about 15 minutes and the views were just incredible.  For miles, all you could see is snow covered mountains.  After getting attached to my guide, the door opened and it was time to jump.  I wasn’t nervous the entire time, except when I was hanging outside the plane 13,000 feet up!  I asked to do a backflip out of the plane.  The adrenaline was insane and I couldn’t believe I was free falling 120 mph from the sky!  Once my parachute opened, he started doing turns and cartwheeling us through the sky.  My landing was far from perfect, but I was alive and still shaking from the rush.  It took me several minutes just to be able to stand up straight.  I called my mom to tell her happy birthday and reassure her I was safe.  It was by far the BEST thing I have ever done and am definitely addicted to it now.

Then we met up with the rest of our group in the hostel.  Happy Hour just started, so it was 2-for-1 beers.  i had a beer called Rugenbrau, which was a local beer brewed right down the street.  We sat downstairs, just talking and reflecting on what an amazing day all of us had had.  We must have said “This is the best day of my life” a good several hundred times.
On Saturday, we spent the day walking around, exploring and relaxing in Switzerland.  While walking, we found our Bus2Alps leader (Alex) and he told us he was going to see the view of the lakes.  As with everything else I had been experiencing that weekend, saying that the views of the lake were incredible, was quite an understatement.  It was stunningly beautiful and unlike anything I had seen before.  You can’t help but just stare and want to pinch yourself and wake yourself up from this incredible dream.  It’s almost not possible to be able to take it all in.

We stopped for lunch and I had a rosti, which is just shredded hash browns cooked in a skillet.  However, mine was covered in delicious Swiss cheese, cubed bacon and grilled onions.  It was one of the best meals I have ever had, along with the most incredible view that exists in the world.  That evening, we went to a chocolate show and tasting.  Tasting it was by far my favorite part. I think we all ate our weight in chocolate.  They had trays of chocolate of all kinds, and we were just allowed to eat whatever we wanted.  Talk about kid in a candy store.

Then it came time for our second adventure.  Night sledding.  It was incredibly fun and amazing!  You get this metal sled without any type of steering mechanism.  To “steer”, just put one of your feet in the snow (this didn’t really work for me; I just hoped for the best when passing people).  We all had to wear these blinking red lights on our backs so we wouldn’t run into each other.  You basically are told to you follow the white and if it isn’t white, it’s off the side of the cliff or a tree.  Awesome.  It took about an hour to get all the way down the mountain.  There were times when nobody was in front of me for several seconds and all I could do was hope that I was still on the right track.  I took some time and ate snow.  How many people can say they ate snow off a SWISS MOUNTAIN?!

The best part was the views.  The night was so crisp and clear without a cloud in the sky.  You could literally see EVERY single star.  The stars gave the sky just enough light, that you could see the tips of the snow covered mountain tops in the background.  It was so faint, that a camera couldn’t even capture it.  The night ended with a fondue dinner that was included with the night sledding.  We got a pitcher of beer, salad, pork, rosti and cheese fondue.
Before leaving on Sunday, we went to this awesome place, where the lady had bagels overnighted for New York.  I finally got to have an American bagel!
I cannot wait to go back to Switzerland.  It has part of my heart now…

Interlaken, the best weekend of my life

Ok, my trip didn’t start too smoothly.  I was coming off a wild week at Prague and Barcelona.  I was planning on relaxing and having a catch up weekend with my older sister (shes a teacher in Madrid).  I slept through the 6:30 departure and had to catch a train to Florence.  Of course, my train got delayed and I had to run with Alex to not hold the trip up any longer…
So I got on the bus in Florence.  Right when I could check my email and catch my breath on the bus, I got my number one choice internship offer on the bus.  Needless to say I was psyched.  I caught up on sleep and awoke in Interlaken, Switzerland and/or Heaven.  My sister was there and we went skydiving first thing….  Best moment of my life.  I jumped with Dangerous Dave and we went out with the crew Saturday night.  They were the coolest dudes ever, and I have their contact info and told them I will be back for certain.  The main dude told me if I continue to send my friends and do come back, it will be a “Free jump” and he would let me do the crazy stuff in the air I was asking to do but for liability reasons  couldn’t.
So after jumping out of an airplane for breakfast, my sister Alexa and I caught up on life at the bagel place across from Balmer’s.  Turns out the owner is from New York.  Being that my sister and I essentially grew up in NYC, it was great.  The night was a typical #romaraging does Switzerland kind of night.
Saturay we tried waking up early to hit the mountain.  We got kind of a late start but got a great day in.  Alexa and I have gone to Omemo Mountain in Vermont every single week after Christmas of our life.  I don’t know if I could justify continuing that tradition after hitting the Alps.
Amazing. Unreal. Spectacular. Thank You.
