Weekend in Review – June 6, 2011

We started the holiday weekend off right in the Amalfi Coast as Rome students headed there a day early to soak up some sun on a local Sorrento beach, tour around the city center, and sing the night away karaoke-style at Seven Hostel.  On Friday, we met up with the Florence crew and hopped on a ferry to Capri, spending the day touring around the island, checking out the blue grotto, and basking in the views from the chairlift at the top of Anacapri. We finished off the day with none other than a bit of limoncello tasting! Saturday we kicked off our shoes and relaxed on the black-sand beaches of Positano where many students took in the thrills of cliff jumping on the coast.  We topped off the evening hanging out at the roof-top bar of our hostel, marveling at the view of the Bay of Naples. We then spent Sunday touring around the historic city of Pompeii and our Rome crew hiked up to the top of Mount Vesuvius the (still active) volcano!

Moving across the Adriatic, we found ourselves with another awesome weekend in Croatia! After pulling up to the beautiful coastal city of Split, we were off to white water rafting on the Cettina River. After three hours of rapids, swimming, jumping off rocks, and gorgeous mountains, the crew headed back to the newly furbished and incredibly clean hostel, Golly and Bossy. Tucked away in a small alley, the Golly and Bossy hostel is in the center of Split, just two blocks from the water. Everyone then had the chance to explore a little bit of Split before heading to dinner. Seafood seemed to be the thing to order! With some bellies full of seafood risotto and traditional Croatian desserts we were all set for the pub-crawl!

With a good night’s sleep under our belts we were all rested for the island hopping cruise. With a bright blue sky, the sun shining, and a quick boat ride, we headed straight for the beach. Crystal clear waters and a smooth stone beach was the perfect place for a swim and a nap. Heading back to Split, bronzed and hungry, we headed to Trogir, a medieval city with loads of restaurants and street performers. After another delicious dinner and some creamy gelato, we drove back to Split for some beach-side partying and dancing!

To top off the weekend, we also took a day trip to Cinque Terre on Sunday. Cinque Terre was a sunny day of hiking and relaxing on the beach. Afer strolling through Via dell’Amore some of us decided to hike through the five towns and enjoy the beautiful views along the Ligurian coast, while others went straight to Vernazza to have a taste of some fresh pesto pizza. Everyone ended up at the beach in Monterosso, where we sunbathed, enjoyed some cocktails, and cooled off in the clear blue water. Just as it was time to leave it started raining, making us even more thankful for the sunny day we had enjoyed!
